SAN DIEGO ORG RECEIVES GRANT FROM CALIFORNIA HUMANITIES FOR POETRY PROJECT

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — California Humanities has announced the recent round of Humanities For All Quick Grant awards. SAN DIEGO ENTERTAINMENT & ARTS GUILD’s (SDEAG) SAN DIEGO POETRY ANNUAL has been awarded $5000 for its project, titled “POETRY TO THE PEOPLE.”

The Humanities For All Quick Grant is a competitive grant program of California Humanities that supports locally-initiated public humanities projects that respond to the needs and interests of Californians, encourage greater public participation in humanities programming, particularly by new and/or underserved audiences, and promotes understanding and empathy among all our state’s peoples in order to cultivate a thriving democracy. SDEAG is one of two San Diego-based non-profit organizations to be awarded the grant in this round.

The winning project, “Poetry to the People,” is geared at increasing visibility of San Diego’s diverse voices by bringing poetry publication and education events directly into the community. “With this additional support, we’re offering free readings, workshops, and connection to groups who may never have written a poem before or thought their story worth sharing widely,” said Program Director, Michael Klam. Selected works from these events will be included in the San Diego Poetry Annual, a publication celebrating the experiences of local poets for over fifteen years. Jane Muschenetz, SDEAG Director of Partnerships, said, “We’re excited to actively expand this opportunity for expression and publication to as many San Diegans as possible and to connect San Diego with leading cultural organizations like California Humanities.”

“California Humanities is honored to welcome our newest round of Quick Grant awards,” said the organization’s President & CEO, Rick Noguchi. “These projects will push the boundaries for not only how we understand and engage with our diverse array of California histories and cultures, but also provide a unique humanities lens for discussing pressing and important community issues.”
