July 1-August 15th, Poetry Contest! SDPA is proud to partner with International Memoir Writers Association and SD Writers Festival to co-sponsor the new Poetry component of their acclaimed Memoir Showcase. $5/poem reading fee goes to subsidize production costs. Previously published poems accepted – read the full submission guidelines here. Now in its 11th year, the 2026 showcase will be performed on November 14 at 7 p.m. PT at the Garfield Theater in La Jolla.
2 Winning Showcase writers will work with a coach to refine their piece for performance and have an opportunity to meet for a roundtable read with their professional actors and show directors. Winning works along with 3 additional runners up will also be published in the 2026 Shaking the Tree Anthology.

Readings at The Grove are open to all poets and is a safe place to share your work and enjoy a peaceful corner of our beloved Balboa Park. There’s no sign-up sheet, no microphone, no cover charge, no secret password. Connect to the earth mother and the poetry community to enjoy the most organic reading in all the land! We don’t have a wine bar, espresso bar, or personal pizzas, but we offer a lot of heart and soul. All appreciators are welcome. It’s a good idea to bring more than one poem, as we’ll each have at least three or more turns to read. As always, we sit in a circle, and take turns reading one poem each. Samira Hassan is an activist, poet, writer, and aspiring journalist who was born and raised in San Diego California. I grew up in the diverse neighborhood of City Heights, which shaped much of who I am today. Since the age of 10 I’ve been deeply engaged in my community through various forms of activism. Whether through spoken word, theater performances, or canvassing my neighborhood, I’ve always found ways to raise my voice and stand up for the issues that matter to me. Poetry holds a special place in my heart. It’s not just a passion it’s my chosen form of expression.

Dec. 14, 11am-5pm: Come out to UCSD Cross-Cultural Center for SDPF24 Coda, a Poetry Festival — Catch our sessions in the Comunidad Room 11:30-1:30 (info below). This culminating event of SD Poetry Futures 2024 showcases vibrant, ever-growing, and intergenerational SD poetry communities. The closing plenary features a poetry reading and conversation with Lee Herrick (California Poet Laureate 2023-25), Janice Lobo Sapigao (Santa Clara County Poet Laureate 2020-21), and Jason Magabo Perez (San Diego Poet Laureate 2023-24). All poetry enthusiasts, all readers, all writers, all community members welcome!



Dec. 19, 6:30 PM: Winter Reading at Verbatim Books with Kazim Ali, Mac Crane and PLNU’s M.A. in Writing program. Pull up a chair at one of San Diego’s most beloved used book stores for an evening celebration of poetry and nonfiction. Twelve graduate students from PLNU’s M.A. in Writing program will read nonfiction or poetry (3 minutes apiece). Headliners will each read for 7-10 minutes to close out the evening. Mac Crane and Kazim Ali will sell and sign books post-reading.

Now-Jan. 31: Part of the City of San Diego’s OnView Local Arts Program, the free Palm Frond Zoo art exhibit at the Mission Valley Public Library features our very own Jane Muschenetz’s award-winning palm frond animal masks. Paired with whimsical animal poems, the artwork brings something joyful and unexpected to capture the imagination and inspire creativity in all of us. March 9, 5:30-7:30 International Women of Poetry, Join us at Encinitas Art Night free poetry reading, workshop, and open mic. Our Director of Partnerships, Ukrainian-born poet, Jane Yevgenia Muschenetz, will lead an “International Women of Poetry” workshop along with fellow award-winning writers Ari Honarvar, winner of the Nautilus Book Award for A Girl Called Rumi, Leonora Simonovis, Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Literature at USD, and Katie Manning, Editor-in-chief of Whale Road Review and Professor of Writing Emeritus at PLNU. The workshop will focus on global female voices across the field of poetry. Participants will also be invited to write and perform their own poems.

Come visit the SDPA booth with Bethel Swift at Author Alley (see map). Our Director of Partnerships Jane Muschenetz will have a panel at the Poetry Stage at 11:45AM! April 7 @ Central Library: San Diego Poetry Annual, San Diego Writers Festival, Library Foundation SD, and San Diego Central Library proudly present an evening of inspiration and celebration in honor of the city’s vibrant poetry community and seminal poet, Steve Kowit. Taking place on April 7th, 6:30-9:00PM at Central Library, the free and open-to-the-public event will feature a mini-book-fair reception, music, food, and, of course, poetry. Keynote speaker and California’s newest Poet Laureate, Lee Herrick, will be joined on the awards stage by San Diego Poet Laureate, Jason Magabo Perez and local poets of note, including the 2023 Kowit Award winner, Julia Levine, Ron Salisbury, Jeff Walt, Gill Sotu, among others.
